Spring into Action 2022

March 15 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

At DAHA we kick off the growing year with our 'Spring into Action' evening. Historically this has been a time for membership renewals and the ordering of allotment sundries like manure and bean poles but much of that is now fully automated at MemberMOJO! However, we still bring in a guest speaker to inspire members for the new growing season and it's also an opportunity to meet fellow allotmenteers from across Dorking's five main sites. Our speaker for Spring into Action 2022 is the RHS Horticulturist - Matthew Oliver.

Matt is a Horticulturist at RHS Garden Hyde Hall where he specialises in the Global Growth Vegetable garden, growing 350 different species of edible plants, ranging from recognisable hardy annuals right through to unusual and rare tender exotics. He has appeared as a horticultural expert on programmes including Sunday Brunch, Countryfile, Countryfile Spring & Autumn Diaries, Big Dreams Small Spaces, Gardeners World and numerous industry podcasts.

Matt is the holder of the record for the heaviest pumpkin ever grown outside in the UK (it tipped the scales at just under 1,500lb / 680kg) and at Spring into Action he will be talking to us about giant pumpkin growing with transferrable tips that can apply to a successful harvest of any squash crop. With the Dorking and Mole Valley Squash and Pumpkin Show set to return for 2022 (virus and weather permitting) this talk should inspire you to get growing pumpkins BIG and small.
