Mole Valley Squash and Pumpkin Show 2022
'Gourd of the Rings'
- Saturday 15th October, 1pm-5pm
Well, here we are again and this year, come rain or shine, pandemic or worse... we are determined to put on the Mole Valley Squash and Pumpkin Show! Since previous plans to try a new venue seemed destined to fail we have decided to return to the Christian Centre in Dorking (beside St Martin's Church in the centre of the town).
What happens at the Mole Valley squash and pumpkin show?
Pumpkin growers from Dorking (and beyond) display their squashes, pumpkins and gourds in a series of categories for an RHS judge to score and for members of the public, families and children to admire.
Categories may consist of a single pumpkin, a double or a triple entry, with additional weight ranges to give us small, medium and large sections.
Of course we also have a 'bizarre' category for ugly, large and 'accidental' pumpkins as well as entries by local schools. For very large entries we can weigh anything up to 200lbs in weight on our digital scales, but anything larger is very much dependent upon the OTT (Over The Top) estimate for an approximate weight.
The annual show theme...
Historically the annual squash and pumpkin show has a child friendly theme and is decorated accordingly, recent shows have included 'Pumpkemon', 'Harry Pumpkin and the Chamber of Squashes' and 'Charlie and the Pumpkin Factory'. Our theme for 2022 is 'Gourd of the Rings' make of that what you will but expect some appropriate decoration and suitably costumed attendees!
'I don't have an allotment and I've never entered before'
We welcome all entries to the pumpkin show, exhibiting is free. You don't have to have an allotment, perhaps you threw a plant into a compost heap and have surprised yourself with a pumpkin you'd simply like to show off? Exhibiting here is for fun, yes there are trophies for category winners but for the most part nature decides whether to bless us with two perfect butternut twins for a first place and there is a lot of luck involved. As the saying goes, it's the taking part that counts and we put on this show simply to show off the enormous range of squashes and pumpkins that exist in the world - they are certainly not all orange.
